Hazmat dispatch service with your setup packet ready to send

Hazmat and tanker brokers ask for more than anyone else in setup: endorsements, higher insurance, registration certificates, testing programs, tank details. A packet that's missing one item doesn't get a counteroffer, it gets ignored, and the load goes to the next qualified carrier. Our hazmat dispatch service keeps that packet complete and current, so you can say yes in minutes.

We also dispatch non-hazmat tankers. As with every truck, you confirm each load, the broker sends the rate con straight to you, and the broker pays you directly. We never sign for you.

Hazmat freight rewards carriers who are ready. Qualified trucks are fewer, shippers are careful, and brokers covering a chemical or fuel load on short notice call the carriers whose files they already trust. Being that carrier is mostly paperwork done early and done right, which is the part we take off your plate.

The hazmat setup packet, item by item

These are the documents and filings hazmat brokers usually ask for. Each federal rule links to its source. Tick what you already have; the bar fills as you go. When every box is ticked, your packet is ready for the brokers who move hazmat in your lanes.

Setup packet

0 of 8 ready

Every broker adds its own requirements on top of the federal ones: a higher liability limit, a pollution endorsement, a minimum authority age, a safety rating. We read each broker's packet against yours before sending it, so setups pass the first time. Our guide to new carrier setup covers the general process.

The carrier packet builder checklist lets you assemble the standard documents yourself. Keep expiry dates in one place: an insurance certificate or registration that lapses quietly can cancel a load at the shipper's gate.

How we keep the packet current

Hazmat paperwork has more expiry dates than most: the insurance policy, the PHMSA registration year, each driver's CDL, hazmat endorsement and medical card, plus tank inspection and test dates for tankers. We keep them in one list with the dates, remind you well before anything lapses, and send updated certificates to every broker you're set up with when they renew. A broker who sees a current, complete file each time is far more likely to call you first the next time a hazmat load needs covering on short notice.

Link 03Insurance minimums by cargo

Federal insurance minimums by cargo

The federal minimum for public liability depends on what you carry. For vehicles rated 10,001 pounds and over, the schedule in 49 CFR 387.9 sets these floors . Brokers and shippers often ask for more.

The tier is decided by the product and how it's packed, not by the rate or the broker. A carrier insured at the general freight level can't take a placarded hazmat load at all, and a carrier at the $1,000,000 level can haul most packaged hazmat but not the bulk categories in the top tier. Before any hazmat offer reaches you, we check the product and packaging against your policy level, so the coverage question is settled before any offer asks for your yes.

Minimum public liability, 49 CFR 387.9 (vehicles 10,001 lb GVWR and over)
What you haulFederal minimum
Nonhazardous property, for-hire, interstate$750,000
Oil, and hazardous materials listed in 172.101 not in the $5M entry$1,000,000
Certain bulk hazmat: hazardous substances in cargo tanks, portable tanks or hoppers; bulk explosives 1.1 to 1.3; bulk Zone A poison gas; listed others$5,000,000

Read the full schedule for edge cases, such as smaller vehicles and intrastate bulk. If your policy sits at $1,000,000, a $5,000,000 bulk load isn't one you can legally take, no matter the rate. We filter those out before they reach you.

Why brokers ask for more than the minimum

A hazmat incident can cost far more than a policy's limit, and shippers pass that risk down the chain. So a broker moving chemicals may require higher liability than the federal floor, pollution coverage, or a specific insurer rating. None of that is a federal rule; it's the broker's contract. We note each broker's number next to yours, so you can decide whether raising coverage opens enough freight to be worth the premium.

Starting with a narrow list

You don't have to haul every class from day one. Plenty of carriers start with one or two hazard classes and packaged freight in a van or flatbed, then move into bulk or tank work once their record and coverage support it. Tell us your comfort zone and we'll search inside it, and show you what opens up if you widen it later.

Link 04Tanker specifics

Tanker specifics: endorsements, tank types and wash-outs

Endorsements

A tank vehicle endorsement is required to drive a tanker, and a hazmat endorsement is required to haul hazardous materials . Many hazmat tank loads need both. Brokers check endorsements in setup, so we keep a copy of each driver's CDL on file and match drivers to loads.

Tank types

Chemical tanks, fuel tanks, food-grade liquid tanks and pneumatic dry bulk each move different products, and a load has to match the tank's specification, lining and compartments. We record your tank's details once so you're only offered products it's built for.

Wash-outs

Most shippers require a clean tank and a wash ticket, especially when switching products or moving to food grade. A wash costs time and money. We ask who pays for it and whether it's on the rate con, and plan reloads that need no wash where we can.

Keep every wash ticket and send us a photo. Shippers ask for them at the rack, and a missing ticket can mean a second wash or a refused load.

Hazmat routing and timing

Some tunnels, bridges and city routes restrict hazmat, and some loads carry their own routing rules. Shippers often load on fixed schedules, and loading or unloading tank freight can take hours. We plan around those restrictions and ask for detention terms that reflect the real time at the rack or plant, written on the rate con before you confirm.

What we ask before you see a hazmat offer

The product and its hazard class, packing group and UN number. Whether it's packaged or bulk, and the quantity. Placarding required, and whether your driver has the right endorsements. Any routing restrictions or attended-parking requirements. Loading and unloading method, who connects hoses on tank loads, and whether a wash ticket is required before loading. The liability amount the shipper wants on your certificate. All of that goes in the offer, so you decide with the full picture.

When paperwork doesn't match

If the shipping papers at pickup show a different product, class or quantity than the rate con, stop and call us before loading. A mismatch can mean the wrong placards, the wrong insurance tier or a product your tank isn't rated for. We get the broker to fix the paperwork or cancel the load cleanly, and we ask for TONU if you were dispatched on bad information. Never roll on papers you don't trust.

Hazmat and tanker dispatch FAQ

Questions carriers ask

How much does hazmat dispatch cost?
The same as every truck type: 7% of the rate con gross while your MC is under 6 months, 5% after, and 4% per truck for fleets of two or more. Lumper reimbursements are excluded. No hazmat premium, no setup fee, no minimum. Billed weekly on delivered loads, with 30 days notice to cancel.
What insurance do hazmat brokers require?
At least the federal minimum for what you haul: $1,000,000 for most listed hazardous materials and oil, and $5,000,000 for certain bulk hazmat, such as hazardous substances in cargo tanks. Many brokers and shippers ask for more than the federal floor and for specific endorsements on the policy. We compare each broker's requirement with your policy before sending a packet.
Do you dispatch tanker trucks?
Yes, under your own authority: liquid tankers, food-grade tankers and pneumatic dry bulk, hazmat or not. Drivers need the tank vehicle endorsement on their CDL, and hazmat tank loads also need the hazmat endorsement. We record your tank type, capacity, compartments and last product so loads match your equipment and wash-out requirements.
Do I need PHMSA registration?
If you transport a quantity of hazardous material that requires placards, generally yes. Federal rules require PHMSA registration and an annual fee for anyone carrying placarded loads, plus certain bulk, explosive, radioactive and toxic-by-inhalation quantities. Small businesses pay a lower annual fee. Check the rule for your operation; many brokers ask for the registration certificate in setup.
Do hazmat loads pay more?
Often, because fewer carriers are qualified, insurance costs more and the work carries more responsibility. But it varies by lane, product and season, and we don't promise rates. What we do is compare each hazmat offer against your higher costs, including insurance and any tank wash, so you can see whether the premium is real before you confirm.
Can I refuse a hazmat class?
Yes. Tell us which hazard classes and products you will and won't haul, and we filter for them. You can refuse any load for any reason, with no penalty. Many carriers start with a narrow list of classes they know well and add more as they gain experience. Nothing is booked without your yes.
